Does eyeliner pencil expire?

Quick answer: Yes. Pencil eyeliner usually lasts 12 to 24 months after opening. It lasts longer than liquid liner because it is dry and sharpening removes the used tip.

How to store it

  • Sharpen before use to remove the surface that touched your eye
  • Keep the cap on, and keep it away from heat, which can soften or crack the pencil
  • Clean your sharpener now and then so it does not add dirt back to the tip

Why pencils outlast liquid liners

A pencil has very little water in it, which makes it a poor place for bacteria to grow. Each time you sharpen it, you also shave off the layer that touched your lash line. Twist-up and retractable liners

Retractable liners you cannot sharpen do not get that fresh surface each time. Wipe the tip with a clean tissue after use and replace them toward the shorter end of the range, especially if you use them on your waterline.
