How it works
Most cosmetics sold in the EU and UK carry a Period After Opening (PAO) symbol: an open jar with a number of months, like 12M. Under Article 19 of the EU Cosmetics Regulation, products that last longer than 30 months show this symbol, while products that last 30 months or less must show a best-before date instead.
The calculator adds the PAO to the date you opened the product. U.S. law does not require expiration dates on cosmetics, according to the FDA, so the label is the best guide you have. If you don't know the PAO, pick a product type to use general guidance from our shelf-life guides.

Where do I find the PAO?
Look for a small open-jar symbol on the packaging, often on the back or bottom. The number next to it, like 6M or 12M, is how many months the product lasts after opening.
What if my product doesn't have a PAO?
Some products carry a printed best-before date instead. In the EU, products that last 30 months or less must show a best-before date, and longer-lasting products show the PAO symbol.
