Does eyeshadow expire?

Quick answer: Yes. Powder eyeshadow usually lasts 1 to 2 years after opening. Powders last longer than creams because they contain little water, but they can still pick up bacteria from brushes and fingers.

Why powders last longer

Bacteria and mold need moisture. Pressed powders have very little, so they stay usable much longer than creams or liquids. That is why brands and dermatologists give powder shadows one to two years, while cream shadows get closer to six months to a year.

Hard pan is different from expired

A hard, shiny surface usually comes from oil on fingers or brushes, not age. Gently scraping off the top layer with a clean tool can bring the powder back. If the shadow also smells off or changes color, that points to spoilage, and it is time to let it go.
